Kabi Nazrul Government College (also referred to as KNGC) (Bengali: কবি নজরুল সরকারী কলেজ), formerly known as Govt. Kabi Nazrul College is one of the most renowned and oldest educational institutions of Bangladesh. This institution began its journey in 1874.
Kabi Nazrul Govt. College is a public school in Laxmi Bazar, Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The school offers education for students ranging from eleventh grade to eighteenth grade (approximately ages 16 to 24). With over 2,200 students, 500 of which reside in its dormitories, KNGC is one of the largest colleges in the Dhaka city.
Kabi Nazrul Govt. College is noted for its academic performance and
extracurricular activities, having produced many notable alumni
including leaders in business, the military and state and national
politics as well as senior government officers, scientists and
engineers. The Government of Bangladesh recognized the school for its strong performance in the Higher Secondary Certificate examination in 2001.
Besides, this college has played a very significant role in the historic language movement and the liberation war of Bangladesh.
Specially the existing set of brilliant and experienced teachers of
this college have demonstrated exceptional examples in conducting
co-curriculum activities including class-room teaching with a view to
create scientific minded, knowledgeable global citizens in order to face
the challenge of the twenty-first century.
History
Kabi Nazrul Govt. College was originally established at Dhaka by a grant from the Mohsin Fund in 1874 as Mohasania Madrasah in the model of Calcutta Alia Madrasah, and came to be known as Dhaka Madrasah.
In 1915 it was converted into Dhaka High Madrasah. In the following
year, its Anglo-Persian department got separated and became the Dhaka Government Muslim High School. With the establishment of the University of Dhaka in 1921, the school was upgraded into a college and got a new name, the Islamic Intermediate College.
It continued to operate as a school-cum-college till 1968, when the
college section got separated to form a new institution named Government Islamia College Dhaka.
After the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, the college was renamed
as Kabi Nazrul Government College in 1972, and in the same year, it was
upgraded to a degree college.
Campus
Kabi Nazrul Govt. College is located on the old part of the Dhaka city. The campus is in southeast Dhaka at Municipality Street, just opposite the campus of the Jagannath University. The campus consists of dormitories, teachers' quarters, individual residences for the principal and vice-principal, staff quarters, a small mosque, basketball and volleyball courts, an auditorium, an administrative building, and a full-size football field.
A monument has been built in front of Academic Building 1 to commemorate those killed during the Bengali Language Movement
demonstrations of 1952. The Language Movement was a political effort in
East Pakistan, advocating the recognition of the Bengali language as an
official language of Pakistan.
Buildings
With 8 buildings (including the newly built House), three of which
are dormitories, it is one of the largest colleges in the Dhaka city. In
total, the college has 2 fields and playgrounds. Two buildings known as
Academic Buildings are used for academic purposes. Academic Building 1,
for eleventh grade through to twelfth grade, is located at the
northeast side; Academic Building 2, for thirteenth grade through to the
eighteenth grade, is located at southeast corner of the campus.
Academics
The college offers higher secondary (Higher Secondary Certificate)
along with university level education for both boys and girls.
Admission
Although Kabi Nazrul Govt. College operates from the 11th through the
18th grade, it only admits students into the 11th, 13th and 17th
grades. Consequently, the higher grades have fewer students than the
lower grades, as a relatively large number of students transfer out.
Admission in the 11th and 13th grades are based on admission tests. The
admission tests for KNGC are highly competitive. Students in these
grades are admitted through written and viva voce
tests. Students who pass the written test have to qualify in the viva
exam. Eligibility of admission to the 11th grade is determined by a
student's grade point average
(GPA) in the previous S.S.C. examination (not more than two years old).
Many students with the highest grades in the S.S.C. compete for
admission as the school has limited enrollment in every grade.
Curriculum
The curriculum of Kabi Nazrul Govt. College includes traditional
intermediate level academic subjects from the grade 11th to 12th. For
13th to 18th grade students have to follow the traditional curriculum of
the National University of Bangladesh.
Students of the intermediate level (grades 11 and 12), have to elect
one of the three major programs: Arts and Humanities; Commerce; and
